Yigong Shi leads the research at the Institute of Biology, WIAS.

Institute of Biology is committed to cultivating compound talented research students with multi-discipline backgrounds, including biology, chemistry, and physics, to meet the growing demand for life sciences comprehensive talents, the Institute aims to become one of the leading biology research and talents training centers worldwide.  

Institute of Biology covers Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Pharmacy and all the relevant basic research and application research. In the first phase (2016-2018), Institute for Biology intends to establish three first-degree disciplines, which are Biology, Biomedical Engineering and Pharmacy. Among them, Biology (first-degree discipline) has 7 second-degree disciplines, including Botany, Microbiology, Developmental Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics and Ecology. Pharmaceutical Chemistry consists of Pharmacy (first-degree discipline) as a second-degree discipline.

Institute of Biology plans to set up three key laboratories, including Structural Biology Research Center, Multi-group Big Data Research Center and Innovative Drug Research Development Center.

The Institute will focus on the above key discipline layouts, integrate directions of research, coordinate resource allocations, and promote disciplinary overlapping and integration, in order to achieve major breakthroughs and promote the development of all relevant areas. 

Institute of Biology will set up first-class personnel with both reasonable structure and scientific layout through carefully designed phases in the future.
